What does Super 120s to 180s actually mean?

The Super number refers to the fineness of the wool fibre. The higher the number, the finer the fibre and the softer and more lustrous the cloth — but the less it resists creasing. For regular wear, Super 120s to 130s remains the most balanced choice.

The short table

Super 100s–110s: Hard-wearing; the choice for daily use and travel
Super 120s–130s: The most balanced choice for most people
Super 150s: Soft and lustrous; occasion wear
Super 180s and above: Very fine, creases readily, for occasional use

A higher number is not always better

This is the commonest misunderstanding. Super 180s costs more than Super 120s, and is the worse choice for a suit you wear three times a week. A finer fibre means a more delicate cloth — and delicate means it wears through sooner and creases more readily.

The simple rule: the more you will wear it, the lower the number you want.

Weight, the number fewer people look at

Beside the yarn count you will find the weight, in grams per metre. For Tehran: 240 to 280 grams covers most of the year, and 300 upward for winter. Below 220 is summer only.

Weight, more than yarn count, decides how a suit hangs.
